Shimla – II :Heritage Walks
The Center of the town- The Mall Road runs from the Scandal Point to the Christ Church. A Heritage Walk is suggested around town, covering Scandal Point, Gaiety Theater, Rothney Castle, Kali Bari Mandir, Viceregal Lodge & the Botanical Gardens. The Viceregal Lodge was formerly the residence of the British Viceroy, Lord Dufferin. The Lodge has magnificent lawns, Botanical gardens and a small café. It presently houses 'The Institute of Advanced Studies.
Another interesting walk beyond the Mall is to Summer Hill & the Glenn Forest, via Annadale. Annadale, now the Army Golf Course and sports reserve was built as a playground for the British. It is the largest stretch of flat ground in and around Shimla. Cricket & Polo are still played here and the army uses the place as a Helipad. A special picnic Basket could be carried from the hotel. The Summer Hill has pleasant shady walks. The Himachal Pradesh University is located here. It is also famous because Mahatma Gandhi once stayed here at the Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur Mansion.
Himachal State Museum & Library: About 3 Kms. from Scandal Point, the museum, houses a good collection of statues, miniatures, coins, photos & other items from around Himachal Pradesh. Entry is free and the museum is open from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
